What do you consider to be LSUA’s weaknesses that negatively impact student learning?

3Apr 15, 2013 12:29 PMOur weakness is the trust and loyalty from our student body. More times than not a student attends LSUA to either learn the ropes of the college life and go bigger once they are comfortable, or decide to go here for a lower price as compared to others. It is not a decision to attend based on LSUA's academics or merit.
4Apr 15, 2013 11:56 AMAll the poor mouth-thers who rail on and on about our university. This is not to say you cant express yourself but this should be done with love and kindness. This is not to say you will not have personality conflicts but it is to say that people learn to work out their difference and clear the air and put a smile on their face. It is to realize that staff---student---and professor are all necessary to complete a circle. Make it fun! Learn your co-partners lights and dislike. Try and try again to harmonize with each other. Get the sticks out of your eyes; be helpful, kind and courteous. Remember the boss is #1 but even though you might be right, sometimes I would rather be NICE! If we could envision a bigger picture then the whole community would work to care for each other more, with less stomping! EMPOWER AND EDUCATE!
5Mar 26, 2013 1:21 PMThe attitude of this is the way we've always done it so that is how we'll continue without any hint of being open to change. This is complete and utter nonsense. How can we ever expect to survive without constantly reevaluating EVERY aspect of our university and being open to change in those areas if needed. Someone who is not open to change not only negatively affects their direct role, but also however many students interact with that person.

7Mar 21, 2013 10:43 AMAgain I think that our money is not being used in the students' best interests. I think that if our money were focused more on campus, and improving our programs HERE on campus instead of out there trying to bring more students in, we would have a better learning environment. I also think that there is lack of motivation toward some programs. If we showed enthusiastic motivation to all of the programs here, equally, students would be happier about the program they chose to pursue, rather than changing to something else because the program they loved was neglected. Right now, our sports are getting all of the attention because it is this big new thing. And that is fine, but don't neglect our other programs in the meantime.

10Mar 19, 2013 7:36 AMLack of consistency in providing information to students/students get different answers to the same questions when asked of different LSUA employees--students have difficulty understanding how to accomplish certain tasks on campus without the intervention of a faculty/staff member. Too much credit earned via extra credit--learn the material, not how to blow off assignments hoping to get easier extra credit assignments (volunteer for an event, write a one page critique, etc.). Increasingly larger class sizes--there goes one of our bragging points. ***Lack of knowledge in the community about LSUA today. I still find people in the area who do not know that LSUA grants bachelor degrees. Series of articles in the Town Talk highlighting each department--free advertising?

16Mar 14, 2013 9:26 AMI feel that LSUA should implement a system to let students know where they stand grade wise in a class before the end of the semester. Many students would like to have an idea of where their grades stand before finals begin. But from talking with some students, some of their professors don't let them know or don't really explain their grading system very well. There really needs to be more to help in retaining the students we currently have.

19Mar 14, 2013 6:52 AMThe lack of student organizations and activities on campus. They have nothing to do in their down time that encourages them to connect with their fellow students, and in my opinion this is why alot of our younger students seek to eventually move to bigger campus. If we want to continue to attract more freshman and keep them for the full span of their degree we need to start offering fun, safe, on campus alternatives for them to do. If we can encourage them to make permanent connections here they will be more inclined to stay and therefore be more interactive with their courses.
20Mar 14, 2013 6:44 AMToo much emphasis and programs seem to be designed for the student in need of remediation as opposed to programs that are beneficial to all students. Another negative is that course offerings are not made in a manner which promotes students to be enrolled full-time regardless of their life/work situation.

23Mar 14, 2013 6:21 AMOnly negative I've heard since I've been here came from a parent of a student and involves an older, more senior biology instructor who refused to slow down or compromise to accomodate students with special needs, and told a student "its my way or the highway". Student chose the highway and is now flourishing at NSU.

25Mar 13, 2013 9:25 AM1. When no one will take the time to listen to the students concern, and they decide to change their major to something they really don't want or switch schools. 2. The advising center can sometimes be a hinder to students. A lot of the time the students are being advised for the wrong courses, and sometime we catch it and sometime we don't. A freshmen should not be taking no more than what they need for their curriculum starting out, not 3000-4000 level courses. I know that courses be closed sometime by the time it is time for them to register since they register last, but that is no excuses for some of the schedules we have seen. The center needs to meet with each department regarding updates on curriculum and what courses outside the curriculum that would benefit the students such as electives within each department.
26Mar 13, 2013 6:23 AMA history of being known as a "last resort school". Too many students come here with little motivation and they impact the LSUA brand everywhere they go. LSUA has to overcome that. Also, professors have to learn to be less cold-hearted. If they are truly being "bothered" by students, then they should seek employment elsewhere. Being a professor requires being the "bigger man" and helping where you can, often bowing down and holding the hand of a student at times to get them through the material. This doesn't mean artificially advancing the students just to pass them through - college students are adults and need to be treated that way, but the school is nothing without quality graduates. Period.

Instead of spending upwards of $30K for a useless father-and-son library consulting duo from New York, why couldn't that same $30K be used ( . . . wait for it . . . ) for pay increases and merit raises for both faculty and staff? 2. I would like to see an increase in the variety of foreign language offerings at LSUA, and I think the popularity of Dr. Nangia's recent Hindi class demonstrates that students would be receptive to this. Personally, I have always wanted to see LSUA offer a few courses in German--maybe even Latin and Greek. 3. With regard to competative sports offerings at LSUA, I would like to suggest that the C&C committee consider adding courses in fencing and rowing (or "sculling").

29Mar 12, 2013 2:01 PMToo many students just give up. Financial Aid plays an important factor in keeping students here and the lack of it causes student to seek employment first and put their education on hold. They quit school and many do not return.
30Mar 12, 2013 1:46 PMIt's not really the fault of the school per se, but LSUA has not found a way to really capture the commuter student. Students leave campus before they take advantage of the tutoring and other academic services that LSUA offers. Ideally, LSUA would find a way to reach those students and impress upon them the importance of taking advantage of those services. Perhaps there is another way to reach these students. Students should be left with the same advisers (aside from the time that they spend in the Advising Center) throughout their academic career unless they change majors or a faculty member leaves.
31Mar 12, 2013 1:39 PMTold by students, some instructors do not respect our students. Students are made to feel insignificant. Some individuals in positions that work closely with our students tend to talk down to our students instead of showing concern and respect.
